Act I
1849, a Mining Town in California
La fanciulla del West opens in the Polka Saloon, when a fight breaks out. This fight is broken up by the moral centre of the camp, Minnie, the owner of the Saloon, who is adored by all in the town, particularly by the Sheriff, Jack Rance. A Wells Fargo agent walks into the saloon, who in search for a bandit called Ramerrez. A stranger, Dick Johnson, arrives, who Minnie recognises from her past. Their connection grows, and so does Rance's jealousy.​​
Act II
Minnie's Cabin
At Minnie's cabin, Johnson and Minnie declare their love for each other. Johnson is injured by Rance and miners, who are searching for Ramerrez. It is revealed that Johnson is in fact the bandit that is Wanted. Torn between love and betrayal, Minnie hides Johnson. Rance finds him hiding in her cabin. To save his life, Minnie challenges Rance to a game of poker... if he wins, Johnson dies, if she wins, he lives. Realising that she is loosing the game, Minnie cheats, and wins the game of poker.​
Act III
The Great Californian Forest
Johnson is prepared for hanging, Minnie pleads with the miners and Jack Rance, reminding them all of all she has done for them. The miners agree to let him live, and Minnie and Johnson leave town to start a new life.
